Background: One of the sources of low back pain is pain that originates in the lumbosacral spine facet joints arthritis. Reducing the degree of pain and confirming its cause can be achieved with image-guided facet joint long acting corticosteroid and local anesthesia infiltration. This study aimed to find out how well lumbosacral facet joint long acting corticosteroid and local anesthesia infiltration guided by computed tomography (CT) worked for relieving low back pain.
Methods: This retrospective study involved 50 patients aged ≥ 30 years, both sexes, suffered from low back pain caused by lumbosacral facet joint arthritis had tried conservative treatment without success. Patients received CT-guided intra-articular facet joint long acting corticosteroid and local anesthesia infiltration.
Results: The pain was significantly lower immediate post procedure (20%), 1 month (14%), 6 months (38%) and 12 months (34%) than before procedure (100%). The recurrence of symptoms occurred in 8 (16%) patients.
Conclusions: CT-guided intra-articular facet joint long acting corticosteroid and local anesthesia infiltration offers both immediate and long-term pain alleviation. This trustworthy and safe minimally invasive method could allow for accessible and precise needle implantation.
